Is when we lost our Kaiser.....I can't believe it's been a year. It seems like it just happened and other times seems like it's been forever since I was able to hug him. I will say that thankfully the pain of his loss has lessened and it's not so sharp anymore.....

Finally have gotten Boomer to do the weave poles, and while he didn't do so great today in class (he was like a wild child and couldn't focus) Joey did take a few pictures of us!

Just made up a batch of Tuna Fudge for Boomer (treats for agility) he LOVES them...did I already say how much he LOVES them? :)

Good thing, cause the house is a bit 'fishy' smelling now.

Receipe:
TUNA FUDGE

2 6oz cans of Tuna (or 1 15oz of salmon)--could also substitute the cans of chicken.
Do not drain!
1 1/2 cups of flour
1 tablespoon of Garlic Powder or Minced Garlic
2 eggs
Grated Parmesan Cheese (optional)

Process cannned fish, garlic and eggs in a food process/blender; liquefy.

Add flour and mix it into a brownie dough-like consistency.

Spread into a greased 9x9 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20 mins.

When brownies are done, they will pull away from the sides of the pan.

Do not wait for brownies to brown on top; take out as soon as edges start to pull away from pan.

Refrigerate or freeze after making.

I cut mine into bite size treats, little squares. The dogs LOVE these. They smell atrocious though!

I can't believe Tucker is almost 9mths old! wow, time sure has flown! It has been that long since our older German Shepherd Leo passed away and then a short month later I lost my beloved Kaiser.....still miss him daily but the pain of the loss isn't as strong, still there though

Anthony comes to me and says "where are the dogs" Me: what do you mean WHERE ARE THE DOGS? A: The front door is open (they had just been right by my feet at the computer)

Well my adrenaline started pumping and my heart fell, especially as I ran out the front door and there were NO DOGS to be seen or heard.....

After calling them for a frantic 5 minutes, we did finally find them....I have NO idea how long they had been out, 5 mins? 20 mins? Thank the LORD they were still close by, hadn't gotten hit by a car (the people in our neighbor drive pretty fast sometimes)

We ended up returning Riley to the breeder. She very graciously allowed us to pick out another puppy. We are very sad about Riley but feel that he will find a home that will work out much better for him then ours.

Ok, so yes, we got another puppy....Tucker (for a lack of us finding a name we like better)

Can you believe we've had Riley for over a week and I haven't posted very many pictures? bad me, bad me!

I took a tumble down our steps in the middle of the night while carrying him. He was fine, me not so fine. Really bashed up my knee good. OWWW!

Dealing with the potty training...dealing with the parts where he tries to assert himself with us and we firmly tell him "ah, we are the alpha pack members not you"....I forgot about the joys of that part of having a puppy. Yes I am going through my self doubts about why did I get another puppy!?

Little Riley came home yesterday! it was quite the introduction. Bluebelle loves him...Boomer likes him but isn't quite sure what to do with him and Sam, well Sam is Sam! (have to know her to understand)

Riley keeps trying to see if BB or B have some lovely milk apparatus .... NOPE!

First night went well....he was up a few times but then he is only 6 weeks old. He is such a little love bug and really wants to explore everything and everywhere. We broke down and got one of those play yards to put him in when he is not crated.

you knew I wouldn't be able to resist. But first, this is NOT a replacement for my Kaiser Dog.... I don't think we will get another G. Shepherd for quite a while; that I feel would be trying to replace him. But this little guy will help to fill the hole that Kaiser did leave in the family.

I was a little worried/concerned that Boomer would think the tree was for him to you know, pee on (not that he does that in the house but it's not everyday we bring in a tree either). But he has been a very good boy, they both have! No stealing of ornaments :)

Not everyone's cup of tea

A friend was over and asked how I was doing after losing Kaiser right on the heels of Leo...I said, doing ok, considering. But we just got Kaiser's ashes back and they are sitting right next to Leo's, over there on the fireplace....he was like 'ummm, ok' ( I do believe he thought that was the most bizarre thing he had ever heard of).... do you think it's weird?
We have had many dogs over the years and have never had their ashes....until we moved here to Arizona where it was finally affordable for us, when our old dog passed away.

The CLINIC where we took Kaiser to have him humanely put down, also offered a clay imprint of their paw, which was at no charge. I thought that was just the nicest thing and sobbing at the time, said of course I wanted it (I would have paid for it too!)

So anyhow, here is a picture of Kaiser that I like (it is leaning against the frame with a different picture of him in it) along with the pawprint. My hubby found the little easel to put it in.

Time is healing the pain of loss, each day is easier...knowing he is at the Rainbow Bridge gives me comfort.

We had Kaiser put down this afternoon. Starting yesterday morning at 1:30am he started having seizures (remember he had that one last month) and after that one came another a few hours later....for a total of 7 for that day alone. Over the night time (and I have not slept except for a few minutes here and there since yesterday)...he had more and more and closer and closer together. and they were violent ones....not little itty bitty ones, but ones where he was thrashing around, body flipping and the legs just freaking out. Well he never came out of these seizures. He would have one, and then just lay flat, seemingly asleep. And then anywhere from 10 mins to an hour later have another one. He never 'woke' up again. The vet said we made the right choice.

RIP Kaiser 12/3/07 to 11/6/10
OMG, I miss him so much!!!! I can't believe he is gone.
Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate them. It has been an awful month.

Kaiser my baby, my German Shepherd who is 'attached' to me and is my baby, started having seizures early Friday morning see this post http://aussiepup.blogspot.com/2010/10/two-dog-emergencies.html

So anyhow, he recovers from it then at 9am has another one. I was home alone (just me and the dogs) and it was scary. Then he had one about 5 hours later....then one at 7p and then one at 9:30p (the vet said he could have a cluster---yep that is alot of them) but the directives were to keep a log of them and when/how often.

Well, it never got any better after the 9:30p one. He had one that I know of at 12:20a which was pretty intense (he may have had other small ones that I don't know of).....and after that he didn't really seem to get any better. At about 2am he had another one and it's been that way for the rest of the morning; seizure after seizure. It is heart breaking.

I am going to pick up some meds for him today but I don't know how I will get it down into him. He is complete out of it, never has come out of the seizure mode like he did before. I know he is exhausted but it's kind of hard to give medicine like that to someone isn't awake/eating/drinking. And I don't want to get my hand bit either :(

This has really been one of the most awful 24 hour+ of my life. And I have been awake for all of it

since we had to put Leo down.....the remaining four dogs were quite confused when we came home that day, wondering where Leo was.

The next morning, Bluebelle put her head on the outdoor couch (patio furniture) where Leo would lay a lot, especially that last week.

Bluebelle was also the first to find Leo's ashes (the following day), tucked away on the corner of the fireplace. His collar is wrapped around it.

Next to find the ashes/collar was Boomer then Kaiser. They all spent a bit of time sniffing it. As far as I know, Sam never has found it.

I think once they found Leo's collar they realized he wasn't coming back and kind of went on about their lives. I guess a bit like closure for them.

I do catch them sniffing the collar every so often.

I am still in denial that he is gone...it seems so hard to believe the 'gentle giant' (how I would describe him to others) is really gone. It was time and even pass time that he was put down..but we were all there and sat with him till the end. It was sad, but very peaceful and knowing that he would be at rest after this ... makes it a little easier. All I have to say is he was such a trooper throughout this whole thing with us not really knowing if it was an infection (tried treating with meds) or if it was an obstruction (which seems the most likely explanation) but of course the xrays couldn't tell us for sure if that was the case.

I feel bad that I don't have many pictures of him :( I've spent the last year taking pictures of the puppies and of course of Kaiser but not many of Leo and Sam. I know I have printed out pictures but not a lot of digital ones.

Rainbow Bridge: For Leo

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

Update on the Emergencies

Well, Leo is still not eating...he is on antibiotics and prednisone. Blood work came back fine except for potassium/magnesium (due to vomiting/diarrhea) White blood cell count was high. Hence the antibiotics.

Just breaks my heart to see him like this.

Kaiser is doing just fine, no more episodes. So was it really what we thought it was? I don't know... maybe what happened when he woke up was because he fell off the bed??? Vet said they don't normally have a seizure while asleep. His blood work came back perfect. sigh. But at least he is back to being 'him'. He does get crated now at night...that was just way too scary to have it happen again.

Two Dog Emergencies

It has been a very busy and scary weekend at our house.   First Leo, our older German Shepherd didn't feel well and started throwing up.   I already know he has a 'sensitive' so figure that was it at first...then kept on the lookout to see if he might have 'bloat'.

well after watching him that became obvious that it wasn't bloat but that he did have a very upset tummy.....we took him in to the vet and they took xrays because knowing his history (he always finds something to eat that he shouldn't) xrays are inclusive meaning something didn't look right on it but couldn't quite tell if it was a blockage. He is home with IV fluids under the skin and us to watch him

Then after we get Leo settled in after the vet and we go to bed, Kaiser had a grand mal seizure. He was totally freaked out about it (of course) and didn't 'know' any of us. He wanted to get away from us so we put him out back and he ran for like 15 mins around the yard.   We ended up leaving him outside all night ..... it was a long night for me. I think I got an hour of sleep. But he was back to his normal self this morning and happy to see all us. Probably couldn't figure out how he ended up outside.

Puppies are fine but they were freaked out also about Kaiser.

I can't believe I haven't posted since the end of July! my bad, so bad!

All is going well with the puppies. I am only taking Boomer now to agility class; I have really never felt that Bluebelle liked agility very much (well she likes doing what SHE wants to do)....plus like everyone else in the country we have to watch expenses, and that includes taking two dogs to agility class.

Both are doing well....and they are just the greatest kid dogs. They get a real kick out of waking up Joey and Olivia in the mornings (for school) they walk down the hall with me to each kid's room and then jump up on their beds and give lots of kisses! (that was a really long sentence)

They were officially one on Saturday, but mom was sick and flat out sleeping most of the day...sorry for the belated birthday wishes! This last year has gone by amazingly fast. Seems like just yesterday seeing them for the first time.

at 7:30 am it was already in the high 80's and by the time we finished agility at 8:30am it was 90℉! Bluebelle decided she was 'done' way before the others and no one was going to be able to budge her into doing one thing more except to lay down in the shade.

It was also determined she needs to go on a diet (don't we all!? ok, I do!) Boomer did great and would have done even better if his 'mom' would have had her act together more often! can I blame it on the heat?

and they will be one year old! This year has gone by so fast. Looking back, it's hard to believe that day almost a year ago when we went out to the barn and got to see the brand new litter of puppies, that two of them would become ours!

Well today's class was number ..... oh I don't know...... we've done a lot of them now, I've lost count! :) I have kept Joey out of school last week and today (it's the last week of school) to come to agility class with me and work Bluebelle while I am working Boomer. Now that it is summer time (yeah, no school) he will be able to come with me weekly. :)

Today, we finished the class off with each of us (teams: dog/human) doing 12 obstacles.....all I have to say is we were ALL TIRED!

it was Red Jump, Teeter (Totter), White Jump, A frame, Green Jump, Tunnel, Pink Jump, Blue jump, yellow tunnel, quick turn up the dog walk, Blue Tunnel, White Jump

we practiced them in separate parts and then Sherry put them all together. Pups are pooped out and so am I. Joey got to go back to school!!

Today was another day of agility. Here in Tucson we are enjoying our three days of warm weather but the puppies all pooped out early in the lesson as it was HOT for us here :)

I didn't take Bluebelle today as I knew one of our group would be gone, which would leave us with 4 dogs (me having two) and three people (me being one of them)....and oh boy, am I ever glad I didn't!!

These pups are doing really well. It was nice to have Anthony there for help cause we had to do a bunch of obstacles (running) and having to do of them pretty much one right after the other would have killed me. As it is, my knee was really bothering me when we done!

Well we had our first one today...it was FUN!! I think Boomer liked it. Next week I'll bring Bluebelle and Boomer (I didn't take her today since she just had her surgery on Saturday).

I'll have to remember to bring a camera and take pictures next week. There are four of us in class, well five counting my two.

is doing GREAT!! she was groggy the first day when we brought her home and slept most of the day...Sunday morning she was a maniac! was running around the yard like crazy. You would never have known she just had surgery!

Bluebelle is getting spayed. We have tried to keep the news from her so she won't be nervous or upset :(

They are all (the dogs) wondering why they have had no breakfast nor water...I don't think they are very happy with 'mom' this morning. We are going to see if we can 'show' Boomer, so are waiting on neutering him.

officially OVER!! woo hoo!!! it was fun, I'd admit it. But it was 10 weeks long and started at 7:30 at night....and the place was like 40 mins from me!   Which meant I didn't get home till almost 10 pm....way past my bedtime.

The Boomer and I scored a 2nd place spot with a very cool trophy (whoo hooo for us) Joey scored the Most Improved Team (voted by all the attendees graduating).    Everyone got a certificate and ribbon.

Boomer was totally awesome on the long sit stay and down stay. Didn't move at all.   wasn't the best on leash and when we went off leash, he had a MAJOR scratching fit!!! His recall was awesome and almost knocked me over (he looked like a bullet flying to me).   Didn't get the 'finish' down but it's coming along.   The breeder's dog was awesome on leash and off leash....but broke on the long sit stay/down stay..... so I ended up scoring above her, but she was so way better.

Bluebelle decided she didn't want to do much of anything so just got up and left.   But I was really proud of Joey cause he was extremely mature during this whole training session.

They are now 5 mths old (talk about time flying) and getting so big.

I've been remiss this last week about 'training'....this week, I've been AWFUL!! but I think the puppies could use a break and me too. Today was very chilly out (ok, come on, we do live in Arizona!) and tomorrow morning it will be down in the 30's.....brrrrr. It dropped over 30 degrees from yesterday to today so I was a wimp and didn't walk. Tomorrow isn't looking good either.

The puppies are doing well with the 'come' command. And walking out to the car with no leads on. They go right to the car now for a 'ride'.

Officially Four Months

Monday was the puppies four month old birthday! Time sure does fly. We are 1/2 way through obedience training and all of the puppies (there are 5 of the litter in class) are doing really well....I am proud of ALL OF THEM!

These puppies have been such a joy....we all get a kick out of watching the 'stub' wag when they are happy...just brings a smile to your face. When Bluebelle is happy she turns into a U shape....that is really funny.

The boys were schedule to work during this mass, so Olivia and I brought Kaiser, Boomer and Bluebelle.... oh my!! I am very sure that it lasted way longer then mass ever does......bringing three dogs is quite tiring. The funny part is we exhausted the puppies and Kaiser too.....! It was nice in the end, when it was over. Not sure I will attempt this again though!

She got stung or bit by something and has quite the 'roman' nose. Got meds for that.

when I have no camera handy, the puppies/dogs are doing something cute...funny....but when I have the camera ready nothing happens.... I sit and wait and wait and wait...... finally putting the camera away only to have them do something camera worthy. It's a vicious circle!!!

As for housebreaking, well my last post stated I was on day 2 of no potties in the house, but leave it the hubby and kids (when mom isn't around) to not pay attention and let them go on the floor.....sigh. Start over again for the 2nd time. We are now again on Day 3 of housebreaking with no accidents.....but I have to leave again today ..... so keeping fingers crossed we can mark this day off on the calendars.

yes, last night was the 2nd miracle..... puppies went all night again without having a middle of the night potty break (you know this is like when the kids were babies and friends would say 'oh Johnny started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks! I always cringed, I was never that lucky). So here we are at 3 1/2 mths and praying for the 3 rd day of miracles....and that it continues in that fashion.

So far, I am on day 2 also of no potty's in the house...... keeping fingers crossed that continues also! :)

Yes, I say. A miracle has happened in the household. The puppies went one full night without being let out!! Let's keep the fingers crossed that tonight it will happen again.

We started our obedience training. I worked with them 3 times yesterday...so far only once today. I need to go do it again.

and I am NOT happy. Someone (Boomer) had a tummy ache and pooped in his crate. I guess the first time he made racket but no body bothered to let him out.....the 2nd time I guess he just decided it was ok the first time, so I'll just go.
Now I feel like I have to start all over on crate training. :( I don't want him to think it was ok to have gone in the crate, but well, when you have a tummy ache and have to go..... I think we all know that feeling.....

Two days of no potties in the house.... from either one. I was so excited! I was like"yeah, we are on our way" but leave for a bit to go to church with 'Dad' in charge and what do I come home to? Two pee pee's in the house. I am sooooooo not happy. I mean come on, how hard can it be to watch two puppies? really I do it every day all week long.

Back to the start again. Dang, I was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
